The Market opened in March of 1976. The original building, built in 1929 housed a poultry business that served Lane County residents from delivery docks facing 5th Avenue. Several expansions and remodels have occurred since its inception, with the most recent remodel and addition of a new entrance completed in 1992.
Originally, craftspeople and farmers rented booth space for two dollars a day. Today, housed in the newly remodeled expansion of the Market, local craftspeople are still able to lease a small sales space for their hand crafted wares. Several of the original businesses have become regional retailers in Oregon with sales of over one million dollars annually.
Fifth Street Public Market is now the cornerstone of the 5th Avenue Historic Market District. This is an area that boasts interesting and unique shops plus fine restaurants making it the hub of Eugene's retail shopping area in the downtown.
